Britney Spears’s Husband, Sam Asghari, Files for Divorce After 1 Year

Britney Spears’s husband, Sam Asghari, whom she married after she was released from the conservatorship that controlled her life for years, filed for divorce on Wednesday after a little more than a year of marriage, according to Los Angeles court records.

The split was first reported by TMZ. The couple were married in California in June 2022; it was Ms. Spears’s third marriage.

According to the divorce filing, which was submitted in Los Angeles Superior Court, the couple separated on July 28. Mr. Asghari cited irreconcilable differences as the legal grounds for divorce.

A lawyer for Ms. Spears, Mathew Rosengart, declined to comment.

Ms. Spears’s marriage to Mr. Asghari is her third. Her first marriage, in early 2004 when she was 22, to her childhood friend Jason Allan Alexander, was annulled after only a few days. In 2006, she filed for divorce from Kevin Federline, her second husband and the father of her two children, after two years of marriage, citing “irreconcilable differences.”

Ms. Spears and Mr. Asghari met in 2016, when he appeared in a music video for her single “Slumber Party,” the couple have said in various interviews. Since then, and throughout their relationship, the two have made regular appearances on each other’s Instagram accounts. The marriage to Mr. Asghari in 2022 ushered in a new era for Ms. Spears after being freed from a conservatorship that her father, James P. Spears, had control over for more than 13 years.

Mr. Spears, was named the singer’s conservator in 2008 amid concerns about her mental health, and he went on to exercise control over her personal life and finances, even as she continued to perform.

Two years ago, after the nature of the conservatorship was detailed in news accounts and documentary films, and thousands of fans had formed what became known as the #FreeBritney movement, Ms. Spears publicly denounced the arrangement that she had been in for more than 13 years.

In 2021, in a speech to the judge overseeing her case, she asserted that she had been drugged and compelled to work against her will, She called the arrangement “abusive” and said she had been “traumatized.”

“I just want my life back,” she said.

Later that year, the judge suspended Mr. Spears from his position as overseer of his daughter’s estate, and in November 2021, ruled to end the conservatorship.

In July, Ms. Spears’s publisher announced that she would publish a memoir, “The Woman in Me.” The memoir is set for release on Oct. 24 and will be published by Gallery Books.

Ms. Spears’s divorce is not the first celebrity split to capture widespread attention this summer. Last month, the actors Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello announced their divorce after seven years of marriage.
