Cyclone Biparjoy has made landfall near Jakhau Port in Gujarat’s Kutch district after churning across the Arabian Sea for over 10 days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said June 15 evening. Strong winds and heavy rains battered Kutch and Saurashtra coasts as agencies remain on high alert.

After the landfall, the IMD said that the cyclone system lay centered over Saurashtra-Kutch region and weakened from a very serious cyclone to a serious cyclone. The cyclone is expected to move northeast by morning and weaken further before reaching south Rajasthan.

At least 22 people were injured, while electric poles and trees were uprooted in Gujarat, officials said. About 940 villages plunged into darkness.
