Oprah Winfrey Distributes Aid at a Maui Shelter

Oprah Winfrey, who has been a part-time resident of Maui for more than 15 years, distributed supplies on Thursday at the War Memorial Stadium in Wailuku, which is being used to shelter evacuees from the island’s deadly wildfires.

“I came earlier just to see what people needed, and then went shopping,” she said in a video from the BBC. “I actually went to Walmart and Costco and got pillows, shampoo, diapers, sheets, pillowcases.”

In the video, she carries a pillow past rows of cots and folding chairs set up in a gymnasium. “It’s a little overwhelming,” she said.

Residents have been urging the celebrities and billionaires who own property on the island to support relief efforts. Among others, Jeff Bezos, Peter Thiel and Steven Tyler have bought multimillion-dollar properties on Maui.

Mr. Bezos’s partner, Lauren Sánchez, shared on social media that the pair planned to make donations.

Ms. Winfrey owns roughly 1,000 acres of land on Maui, according to Architectural Digest. She has not commented on the status of any of her properties, which include the Thompson Ranch in central Maui, south of the fires there. She also reportedly owns hundreds of acres in the Kula area southeast of Lahaina, the devastated seaside town in West Maui.

Local residents have expressed mixed feelings about Ms. Winfrey’s real estate pursuits on the island.

Yuki Lei Sugimura, a Maui County Council member, told the Honolulu-based television station KITV this year that she appreciated Ms. Winfrey’s efforts to hire Maui residents and to preserve agricultural land from development. “Those are the big issues, and she’s stepping right into them,” she said.
